What Are Common Core Standards

The California Common Core State Standards (CCSS) were adopted by the California State Board of Education on August 2, 2010, following rigorous review and augmentation by the California Academic Content Standards Commission. The goal of the Common Core State Standards is to better prepare students with the skills necessary for success in college and careers. The standards provide a clear and consistent definition of what students are expected to learn in each grade level and define the knowledge and skills that high school graduates need to master. The standards focus on rigorous content and application of knowledge through higher order thinking skills and real life application.

Common Core Mission Statement:

"The Common Core Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help their students. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities will be positioned to compete successfully in the global economy."
